Introduction

This blog is an assignment for EDUC 5040: Diversity – Constructing Social Realities as part of the Master of Education program at Thompson Rivers University. It is a critical review of the 2002 film, Whale Rider.

Welcome to Melissa and Marie’s critical analysis blog on the film:

This assignment shows the praxis of critical analysis, noticing some of the social constructs and their intersectionalities within the film Whale Rider. The blog starts with a summary of the film, including a video of the film’s official trailer, with some background information on the book, movie and the culture of the characters in the movie. Following the summary is an analysis of social constructs in the film, as well as intersectionalities that occur from these social constructs. Next, is an in-depth critical analysis of the privileges and disadvantages that occur in Whale Rider. A reflection of how we can apply what we have found in the critical analysis as educators follows. The blog concludes with a list of references.
